FA1 120mm Two Guns of the Blackfoot £31.50
Winter on the northern Plains was one of the best times to hunt the larger animals, for in the deep Itv snow they were an easy prey. Nonetheless, the moose hunt has always been a hazardous entreprise and required a great deal of skill and endurance. Using a birch-bark cone as a loudspeaker, Two Guns, a Blackfoot hunter, mimicks the mating call of his quarry to lure it in for the kill. His winter gear is comprised of a hooded coat (capote) made from a Hudson's Bay Company 'point' blanket, an otter fur hat and skin mittens. His mocassins of smoked lodge skins are stuffed with grass to keep his feet dry and warm. His trusty Northwest Trade gun, a flintlock easy to use, repair and make bullets for, was a favourite among mountain men and continued to be used until late in the century. One of the most powerful tribes on the northern Plains, the Blackfoot were next to the Lakota (Sioux) in prominence and at one time, held most of the territory from the North Saskatchewan River in Canada to the southern headstreams of the Missouri River in Montana.
