GC11 1/9th Red Cloud of the Oglala Sioux £23.75

Known as the only Indian chief who won a war with the United States, Red Cloud strongly opposed the government's attempt to construct army forts along the Sozeman Trail, which ran from the Indian hunting grounds In Wyomingto the newly discovered gold fields in Montana. He refused all offers to negotiate and at the head of the Sioux and their Cheyenne allies, relentlessly attacked army construction troops along the route. The two-year (1865-67) harassment came to be known as Red Cloud's War and did not end until the United States agreed to withdraw the garrisons and to burn the forts. In 1868, Red Cloud signed the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie, laid down his arms and agreed to settle peacefully at the Red Cloud Agency in Nebraska. He kept his word and took no active part in the Sioux hostilities of the 1870s. The bust depicts Red Cloud in the regalia he wore during his many trips to Washington, D.C. in the 1870's. His heavily beaded, green-painted ceremonial shirt has been preserved and is now displayed at the Buffalo Bill Historical carrier in Cody, Wyoming.
