MW-04 1/9th Tomoe Gozen Woman Samurai £32.65

“...Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot.” Heike Monogatari (Tale of the Heike) Tomoe Gozen is one of the celebrated examples of onna mushashya (woman warrior) in Japanese history. She rode with her husband General Minamoto (Kiso) Yoshinaka against the Taira during the Gempei War (1180). Tomoe made her last stand at the fateful Battle of Awazu with the last of the Kiso. Some say that she died in the battle with her husband, while others assert that she survived and became a nun. The sixteen-part resin bust depicts Tomoe Gozen dressed in full armour and wearing the traditional white make-up as she can be seen at the annual Jidai matsuri pageant in Kyoto.
