X0-03 120mm Zulu 1840 £31.50

It is generally admitted that the rise of the formidable Zulu army was largely due to one man: the semi-legendary King Shaka (1787-1828) whose reign saw the ascent of the Zulu people from a small tribal clan to the most powerful and feared kingdom in southern Africa. It was Shaka who organised the army with age-graded regiments, thus completing the militarisation of the entire Zulu nation. He also introduced the famous 'beast's horns' tactical formation along with new hand-to-hand fighting techniques using both the stabbing-spear and the shield as offensive weapons. With intensive training, strict discipline and capable commanders, the Zulu army began its brutak and ruthless rise, rapidly establishing their supremacy over their over their southern African neighbours, only to be stopped in 1879 by Gatlin guns and repeater rifles. The eighteen-part model kit depicts a highborn junior induna (officer) as is indicated by the traditional weapons of the Zulu warrior the iklwa (stabbing spear) and the isihlangu (large oxhide shield)
