Before the Norman conquest, the backbone of the Anglo-Saxon army was formed by thegns, warriors whose duty was to carry out the 'common burdens': military service, the repair of fortresses and work on bridges. The King’s thegns pleaded allegiance to the King himself and would serve as his bodyguards or as low-ranking officials. The 16-part resin kit depicts a Saxon thegn at the time of the Viking invasions. His clothing and weapons display the characteristic mixture of Saxon, Briton, Norse and Frankish influences.
